Mayo Day Clinic of South Africa

The Mayo Day Clinic which is housed in Mayo No. 2, was the vision of its creator, Dr Wypke Wypkema. It opened in 1974 as part of the Mayo Clinic "one-stop medical and diagnostic centre" and began with one operating theatre and 20 beds.

It has since grown into a world class facility with two fully equipped operating theatres for general anaesthetic surgery, plus a minor theatre where local anaesthetic and conscious sedation procedures are carried out.

Although we are registered as a day clinic where a patient would be admitted and discharged on the same day, we do have the facilities for overnight stays for observation.

We are affiliated to the National Hospital Network (NHN) and are contracted to most medical aids to charge negotiated rates for all our patients. Private patients are charged competitive rates with discounts offered for early settlement. Private patients are required to pay a nominal deposit on admission.

Endoscopic Procedures

Gastroscopy (or endoscopy) is an examination of the oesophagus (gullet or food pipe), stomach and duodenum (upper part of the small bowel) using a flexible telescope called a gastroscope. When necessary, during the examination, a number of small procedures can also be carried out.

Colonoscopy is a test to check inside your bowels. This test can help find what's causing your bowel symptoms. A long, thin, flexible tube with a small camera inside it is passed into your bottom. You'll be given a laxative so your bowels are empty for the test.

ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) is a technique that combines the use of endoscopy and fluoroscopy to diagnose and treat certain problems of the biliary or pancreatic ductal systems. It is primarily performed by highly skilled and specialty trained gastroenterologists.

EUS (Endoscopic ultrasound) or echo-endoscopy is a medical procedure in which endoscopy is combined with ultrasound to obtain images of the internal organs in the chest, abdomen and colon. It can be used to visualize the walls of these organs, or to look at adjacent structures.
